Charlie J. Meyers

Charlie J. Meyers Artist Biography
Charlie J. Meyers is an American artist working in gestural abstraction and portraiture, exploring themes of resilience, rebirth, and cosmic transformation. His practice centers on the paradoxical beauty that emerges from adversity, exemplified in his ongoing series Dark Bloom - abstract works that channel the metaphysical energies of harmony through cycles of destruction and renewal.
A selection of his abstract works is represented by PXP Contemporary, which included his paintings in their 2024 group exhibition Believing In Tomorrow. A Yale-lectured artist and Concordia University MFA graduate, Meyers has exhibited at Donald Browne Gallery (Montréal), Amos Eno Gallery (NYC), and in the Montreal Arts Council's 2016-2017 touring exhibition.
In 2024, Meyers entered a year-long licensing agreement with La Mer (Estée Lauder), who selected one of his paintings for their Trans Day of Visibility campaign, accompanied by studio documentaries. His work and interviews have been featured by NPR, Innovate Artist Grant, Create! Magazine, and the I Like Your Work podcast.
A Creative Capital grantee (2020) and two-time Illuminate the Arts Award recipient (Philadelphia, 2022/2024), Meyers is also the founder of Moon Cheese Curator, providing 1:1 creative writing support for artists alongside exhibition opportunities. He maintains a studio practice in Fishtown, Philadelphia, where he continues developing his Dark Bloom series.
"Dark Bloom" Collection Statement
The Chocolate Cosmos flower, once presumed extinct, has been rediscovered thriving in the harshest desert conditions. Despite its minimal access to nutrients, water, and fertile soil, it exudes a chocolate fragrance and unveils rich, vibrant petals that encase a darker, cosmic core. This resilience and elegance amid adversity encapsulate the thematic essence of my ongoing latest series of abstract paintings, "Dark Bloom."
"Dark Bloom" explores the journey from profound psychic darkness to a state of full bloom. The series delves into the perpetual cycles of death and rebirth, channelling the metaphysical energies of harmony and order. Created in a spirit of defiance, this body of work celebrates the wonder and beauty of physical existence, serving as a conduit for a deeply immersive and meditative presence for both the artist and the audience.
